The National Retail Federation today lowered its retail sales forecast for 2014 because of slow growth recorded during the first half of the year, but said sales are expected to grow significantly faster over the next five months. NRF forecasted in January that retail sales would grow 4.1% in 2014 over 2013, but today’s revision lowers the forecast to 3.6%.

Portland, Maine-based Emery-Waterhouse, the hardlines distributor acquired by Ace Hardware Corp. in February, announced the new hire of Charles Chibante as VP of Sales.

Chibante comes to Emery-Waterhouse bringing over 20 years of experience in retail, operations, marketing and leadership, including 13 years with Wal-Mart in various leadership positions, as well as eight years as a partner in a family owned and operated construction company.

A more stable lumber market boosted the second-quarter performance of Universal Forest Products, even as the company was forced to pay higher duties for Chinese nails. 

Universal reported second-quarter net earnings of $21.8 million, up 38.1% over net earnings of $15.8 million for the second quarter of 2013. Net sales were $773 million, up 4.6% from $738 million in the same quarter last year.

Loudon, Tennessee-based Iron Doors Unlimited has named Matt Hocutt as its newest national sales manager, effective July 7.

Hocutt will be leading the company's sales team in his new position, driving go to market sales and execution strategies for driving growth in the company's trade, retail and wholesale channels.

U.S. retail sales went up 0.2% in June to a total of $439.9 billion for the month, according to data released today by the U.S. Census Bureau. Though the growth fell below many economists' expectations, June's activity still pointed to a strengthening economy, with sales that were up 4.3% year-over-year.

Retail trade sales (not counting food service) fared slightly better -- up 0.3% since May. Nonstore retailers were up 8.1% year-over-year, and health and personal care stores were up 7.9% since 2013.

Appliance parts distributor Marcone Canada hired Peter Szachlewicz as its first president. 

Marcone Supply, the company's U.S. counterpart, established a presence in Canada with its 2010 buyout of APWagner. Since that time, Marcone Canada has experienced growth in both its retail and wholesale operations, the company said, selling authorized OEM appliance parts, HVAC components and property maintenance supplies.

Steve Mahurin has left Orchard Supply Hardware, where the veteran home improvement merchant and retail industry executive held the title Chief Retail Officer.

According to the San Jose, Calif.-based retailer, Mahurin’s position was eliminated as the company transitions to a focus on operations and expansion.

Irvine, California-based Insteon says its home automation and control technology products are now available in Microsoft retail stores.

The company’s connected-home devices are also available through MicrosoftStore.com and at such stores as Best Buy, The Home Depot, Walmart, Sears and Menards, among others.

San Carlos, California-based Kelly-Moore Paint Company is continuing what it calls an “aggressive retail expansion” with the opening of its 5,400-sq.-ft. store in Petaluma, California.

The store at 905 Lakville St. marks the company’s 105th retail store in northern California.

The U.S. economy added 288,000 jobs in June, pushing the national unemployment rate down to 6.1%, a pre-recession low not seen since September 2008.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, that translated to a decrease of 325,000 unemployed persons, which now number 9.5 million nationally. The number of long-term unemployed (jobless for 27 weeks or more) dropped by 293,000 to 3.1 million.

Kelly Kolb, VP government affairs of the Arlington, Virginia-based Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), made a statement on behalf of the organization regarding union contract negotiations at West Coast ports.

With the deadline to resolve the negotiations drawing near, RILA said its priority was to avoid work stoppage and to keep supply chains functioning as usual.

The National Retail Federation and the Retail Industry Leaders Association asked an appeals court to overturn a federal judge’s approval of a lawsuit settlement over Visa and MasterCard’s credit card swipe fees, saying it was negotiated by only a handful of merchants and would do nothing to bring the fees under control.

The Roseville, California, facility is described as a retail-like showroom where home shoppers can explore design choices, energy-efficient features and sophisticated home automation technologies.

Roseville is also home to two new KB Home communities, Aria and Legato at Westpark, which both celebrated grand openings this spring.

May picked up the pace a bit in the retail sector, with monthly sales improving 0.3% for the month after a fairly stagnant winter season. However, the results still fell below economists' expectations.

The U.S. Census Bureau announced that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales were $437.6 billion in May, a 4.3% improvement over 2013.

Coupons for Iris from Lowe's, the smart home program, are reaching State Farm insurance customers thanks to a deal between the insurance and retail giants. 

In mailings to its customers, State Farm has included coupons good for $10 discounts for Iris Safe & Secure Kits and $25 discounts for Iris Smart Kits. State Farm is further incentivizing the systems with up to 2% discounts on homeowners insurance for those who have the systems in their homes.

Though the U.S. economy pushed an above-average pace in adding 217,000 jobs in May, unemployment stayed flat at 6.3%, its lowest level since November 2008.

Also significantly, the labor participation rate was virtually unchanged at 62.8% in May, as were the number of unemployed persons at 9.8 million.

Those who fall into the long-term unemployed category (jobless for 27 weeks or more) were similarly flat at 3.4 million. That number has declined by 979,000 over the past year.

Laticrete will merge the DuPont StoneTech, DuPont Stone Care and DuPont Paver Armor Pro branded products with its existing portfolio of products, which are already placed in professional and retail channels around the world.
