Oklahoma City-based M-D Building Products acquired Loxcreen Co., a privately held precision manufacturing company founded in 1946 on patents for fabricating window screens. 

The acquisition includes Loxcreen’s Canadian flooring group operated under the Bengard Manufacturing name in Mississauga, Ontario. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The combined sales of both companies will exceed $200 million annually.

Ace Hardware Corp.’s paint program is going through a major makeover with Valspar stepping up as a supplier and taking over the co-op’s paint manufacturing facilities. 

Ace and Valspar announced a long-term deal, under which Valspar will manufacture and supply Ace-branded paint products to Ace dealers. The companies also announced that Valspar has acquired Ace Hardware’s paint manufacturing assets, including two manufacturing facilities located near Chicago.

Less than a year after purchasing it in a hostile takeover, International Paper (IP) has agreed to sell its Temple-Inland Building Products division to Georgia-Pacific for $750 million in cash, subject to certain pre-and post-closing adjustments. The assets to be sold include16 manufacturing facilities: five solid wood mills, four particleboard plants, two medium-density fiberboard plants, one fiberboard plant and four gypsum wallboard plants.

Clear Lake Lumber, the Spartansburg, Pa., manufacturer of kiln-dried hardwood lumber, is closing its American Made Flooring division and auctioning its inventory of hardwood flooring. Almost 300,000 sq. ft. are on the block, along with the division’s customer list, equipment and display racks.

Clear Lake said it is getting out of the flooring business so it can concentrate on its hardwood lumber manufacturing operation.

USG Corp. has achieved the prestigious Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star designation from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) at its Galena Park, Texas, manufacturing plant. Officials from OSHA presented the award on Nov. 29 to USG Galena Park’s 150 employees during a ceremony at the plant.

Energizer Holdings has announced a multi-year restructuring plan designed to save the company approximately $200 million, improve profitability and drive long-term growth. The St. Louis, Mo.-based manufacturer expects that a substantial portion of the actions necessary to achieve the targeted savings should be completed by the end of fiscal 2014 and the total savings are expected to be fully realized in fiscal 2015.

Weyerhaeuser has added the capability to manufacture specialty oriented strand board (OSB) using high-performance MDI adhesives at its OSB plant in Arcadia, La. The mill can now produce Weyerhaeuser Edge Gold floor panels, a subfloor product designed to resist edge swell for smooth, even floors. The MDI capabilities also enable potential production of furniture grade OSB and rimboard.

Monroe, La.-based LBM buying group Allied Building Stores appointed Dale E. Mercer, 50, as president, effective Jan. 1, 2013.

Mercer will succeed David Stiles, a 16-year veteran of Allied, who will continue to serve as president until the end of the year. Mercer joined ABS, a dealer-owned building materials buying group in October 2008, and most recently has served as its chief operating officer. Prior to joining ABS, Mercer was VP manufacturing for Bancroft Bag at its facility in West Monroe.

Whirlpool took the top spot amongst major appliance companies in the 2012 annual American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). Whirlpool has led or tied for first place each year since 1996.

Armstrong World Industries has entered into an agreement to sell its cabinets business to American Industrial Partners for $27 million, according to a company announcement. Headquartered in The Colony, Texas, Armstrong’s cabinet division has a manufacturing facility in Thompsontown, Pa., and employs approximately 750 people. Sales in 2011 were $136 million, just under 5% of the company’s total sales. The unit had a loss in 2011 and had not been profitable since 2007.

The 90-year-old custom window and door manufacturer was recognized for competing on a worldwide basis out of its Midwestern manufacturing facilities in Medford and Merrill, Wisconsin.

Dublin, Calif.-based Epicor Software Corp., will acquire privately held Solarsoft Business Systems from Marlin Equity Partners.

Solarsoft is a specialist in midmarket enterprise resource planning (ERP) and management systems for manufacturing and distribution. The acquisition of Solarsoft is expected to close in 45 days.

Wayne, N.J.-based GAF will open in Gainesville, Texas, a new manufacturing facility for polyisocyanurate (ISO), an insulation material used in commercial roofing systems.  

GAF opened its first ISO manufacturing facility in Statesboro, Ga., which began shipping material in August of this year. It plans four such facilities.

Perrysville, Ohio-based Mansfield Plumbing Products, one of the United States’ largest manufacturers of sanitary ware products, will expand its U.S. production in 2013.

The company said it will invest more than $9 million to expand its Perrysville sanitary ware manufacturing capacity by 50%. Since the expansion is being completed within the existing footprint of the facility, it is far more affordable than a greenfield expansion, which would cost more than four times as much, the company said.
