Jon Nolle is a contractor who needed to take down a deck and fast. His solution: a two-pronged demolition bar that fits over the joist and provides the mechanical advantage to pry up the boards on decks.

An Illinois man whose workers removed and then dumped asbestos-containing insulation with no training or safety protection has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. Duane “Butch” O’Malley, 59, was also ordered to pay restitution of $47,086 to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) related to the cleanup of illegally disposed asbestos, as well as a $15,000 fine, according to an EPA announcement.

Martin Oliver, a journeyman carpenter with 40 years of experience, was severely injured when the nail gun he was using, a Hitachi NR83A, discharged a nail into his head, penetrating his brain and leaving him permanently disabled.

A new bill that would modify the EPA’s lead paint rule has been introduced into the Senate, promising regulatory relief to professional painters and remodelers. S.2148, the "Lead Exposure Reduction Amendments of 2012," was introduced on March 1 by Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), the ranking member on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

A bill introduced into the Pennsylvania House of Representatives would protect that state’s homeowners from mechanics' liens filed by subcontractors if the homeowners paid the contractor in full.

The bill would eliminate the ability of subcontractors, suppliers and others to file liens on owner-occupied residences when the monetary obligations have been paid in full.
