Whirlpool North America, a division of Whirlpool Corp., reported second-quarter sales of $2.5 billion, a 4% increase over its sales in the second quarter of 2011. Overall, North America unit shipments decreased approximately 2%, the company said, with its unit shipments of major appliances to the United States increasing approximately 1%.

Home Depot has announced the expansion of its major appliance brands by adding Whirlpool, Electrolux and Frigidaire in a limited number of stores and on Homedepot.com.

The appliances will be available through the company's Depot Direct delivery network and available to be ordered in all U.S. stores. Depot Direct includes more than 3,000 appliances delivered and installed to the customer's home within one to five days of purchase. Appliance purchases through Depot Direct include free delivery and haul-away.

Lowe’s has hired Kevin Summers as its new chief information officer, effective July 9. He will replace Michael Brown, who announced last April that he had accepted the company’s Voluntary Separation Program and decided to retire after almost 28 years with Lowe’s.

Benton Harbor, Mich.-based Whirlpool Corp. signed a deal with Meritage Homes to be the exclusive appliance provider to the builder’s homes, including first-time, move-up, luxury and active-adult.

Whirlpool will provide Jenn-Air, KitchenAid, Maytag and Whirlpool brand appliances to Meritage Homes’ extensive communities throughout the southern and western states.

In a victory for foreign-based manufacturers, the U.S. International Trade Commission has ruled that LG Electronics and its affiliates were not guilty of “dumping” certain refrigerator models on the U.S. market. The 5-0 vote ended a year-old investigation initiated by Whirlpool, which claimed that bottom-mount refrigerators made in Mexico and Korea were sold in the United States at below market value.

In a preliminary finding, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has sided with Whirlpool in its anti-dumping petition against Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. The Benton Harbor, Mich., manufacturer claims it is being harmed by Samsung and LG, which are selling washers made in South Korea and Mexico at below fair value.

Sears Holdings Corp. has reported a loss of $2.4 billion in the fourth quarter, compared with a profit of $374 million in the year-ago period. And in a move long anticipated by some analysts, the chain also announced plans to tap into its massive real estate holdings to help make up for its faltering retail performance.

Revenue slipped 4% to $12.5 billion from $13 billion. Same-store sales fell 4.1% during the quarter at Sears and 2.7% at Kmart.

Benton Harbor, Mich.-based Whirlpool's CEO Jeff Fettig forecast industry demand in 2012 as "flat to slightly improving." 

The company posted sales of $4.9 billion in the fourth quarter, down slightly from $5.0 billion. But fourth-quarter net earnings increased to $205 million, compared with net earnings of $171 million during the same period last year.

The North America region reported operating profit of $202 million for the quarter compared with $53 million in the previous year.

Appliance maker Whirlpool prevailed in a preliminary finding by the U.S. Commerce Department that foreign producers in South Korea and Mexico -- including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics -- violated United States and International trade laws by “dumping” bottom-mount refrigerators in the United States.

Whirlpool has announced that Roy Templin, EVP and CFO, will retire from the company. As part of the planned transition, Templin will remain in his current capacity until April 2012 to complete Whirlpool's year-end reporting and other transitional items. At that time, Larry Venturelli -- currently SVP corporate controller, chief accounting officer and CFO for Whirlpool International -- will succeed Templin as EVP and CFO.

Benton Harbor, Mich.-based Whirlpool has announced a second-quarter net loss of $161 million, compared with net earnings of $205 million in the same period last year. 

Second-quarter results include the settlement of a Brazilian collection dispute for about $3.78 per share and increased accruals related to developments in the Embraco antitrust matters of $1.08 per share.

Canadian Tire is making a strong push into major appliances.

The 1,200-store Canadian chain now offers Inglis refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers and cooking ranges, as well as Amana freezers and microwaves at its stores across the country.

The expansion into appliances follows an 11-store test last year.

Whirlpool Corp., the Benton Harbor, Mich., appliance maker reported sales of $4.4 billion for its first fiscal quarter, a 3% rise over sales of $4.3 billion in the first quarter of 2010. Earnings for the worldwide manufacturer were $169 million for the quarter, compared with $164 million a year ago.

"Our first-quarter results reflect our ongoing cost reduction efforts and continued innovation investments, which helped to mitigate significant material cost inflation," said Jeff Fettig, chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corp.

Benton Harbor, Mich.-based Whirlpool reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $171 million, up 80% from $95 million during the same period in 2009. 

Fourth-quarter operating profit totaled $202 million, up 1.5% from $199 million in the prior year. Results benefited from cost reduction and productivity initiatives, increased monetization of certain tax credits, higher unit volume and lower incentive compensation.
