The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted the trade mark "SummerWinds" to SummerWinds Garden Centers.

SummerWinds Garden Centers is a Boise, Idaho-based high-end retailer of garden and nursery products. SummerWinds operates retail nurseries in the Silicon Valley of California; Phoenix; and St. Louis. The retailer says it appeals to both the serious and casual gardener with a broad selection of premium gardening products and knowledgeable staff.

Home improvement retailer Menards has decided not to open a store in O'Fallon, Mo., because of President Barack Obama's economic policies, according to a company spokesman interviewed on KMOV, a Missouri television station. 

Menards, based in Eau Claire, Wis., had planned to open several stores in the St. Louis market over the next six months.

Energizer Holdings has announced a multi-year restructuring plan designed to save the company approximately $200 million, improve profitability and drive long-term growth. The St. Louis, Mo.-based manufacturer expects that a substantial portion of the actions necessary to achieve the targeted savings should be completed by the end of fiscal 2014 and the total savings are expected to be fully realized in fiscal 2015.

The appetite for acquisition remains unsated.

“We are confident that we will add other quality companies in the near future that fit our target acquisition profile,” said CEO Paul Isabella during Beacon’s third-quarter earnings call.

Beacon Roofing Supply announced Friday that it has acquired Contractors Roofing & Supply Co., a distributor of residential roofing products and related accessories with one location in the St. Louis suburb of O'Fallon, Mo., and annual sales of approximately $14 million.

A blaze that destroyed a 197-unit apartment building in St. Louis, Mo., displacing 250 residents, has called into question the materials used in the construction of the four-story building. An article on the fire in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the structure was built to code, had working sprinklers, and so-called "draft stops" to slow the spread of fire.

Huttig Building Products, the St. Louis-based distributor, reported net sales of $137.6 million for its second fiscal quarter, a 5.3% rise over sales of $130.6 million in the same quarter of 2011. Net income for the second quarter, which ended June 30, was $1.6 million, compared with a net loss of $1.9 million a year ago.

There were no significant one-time charges or additions during the quarter, Huttig’s CFO, Phillip Keipp, told Home Channel News. Sales were strongest in the millwork category, he said.

Westlake Hardware will close an underperforming store in St. Charles, Mo., on July 1, according to an article in St. Louis Today.

In a statement, the company said that "financial performance has not been at the level necessary to enter into a new long-term lease agreement."

The store opened in 2007.

Menards may become the first anchor tenant in a vacant St. Louis mall, one of local several sites the Midwest retailer is eyeing for expansion, according to an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The developer of the Northwest Plaza shopping center told the County Tax Increment Financing Commission on May 23 that Menards is interested in purchasing 17 acres of the site to build a 160,000 sq. ft. store.

The Stairway Manufacturers' Association's (SMA's) annual conference in Charlotte, N.C., attracted 20% more attendees than last year's event in St. Louis, the SMA announced.

During the conference, the membership ratified a new mission statement: "To be the greatest resource of knowledge and tools contributing to the success of our members and the stair industry." The SMA is currently reviewing its advertising and display policy to determine if less restrictions would be beneficial to its mission.

Huttig Building Products, the St. Louis-based distributor, reported net sales of $99.5 million for the quarter that ended March 31, 2011, approximately 3.9% lower than the same quarter in 2010. Sales declined in both the millwork and building products categories but increased in the wood product category in 2011 from 2010. Millwork sales decreased approximately 8% in 2011 to $47.3 million. Building product sales decreased approximately 1% in 2011 to $40.8 million. Wood products sales increased approximately 6% to $11.4 million in 2011.

Huttig Building Products, the St. Louis-based distributor, reported net sales of $467.7 million for fiscal 2010, a 2.7% increase from net sales of $455.2 million the previous year, according to an annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Net loss for the fiscal year, which ended Dec. 31, 2010, was $18.9 million, compared with $20.5 million in 2009.

St. Louis-based urban redevelopment firm EcoUrban is filling vacant lots in St. Louis with energy-efficient and affordable prefab and modular homes.

The redevelopment project involves a modular building manufactured off-site with green, sustainable features, then trucked to St. Louis, placed on a precast foundation and finished on-site.
