Lowe's has named former Wellpoint CEO Angela Braly to its board of directors, the company announced Friday.

“As former chair and CEO of a publicly traded company, Angela has strong executive leadership and strategic management skills that will be an asset to this board,” said Robert A. Niblock, Lowe’s chairman, president and CEO. “She also brings a wealth of experience and insights in critical areas such as consumer marketing, communications and public relations.”

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe's reported third-quarter net income of $396 million, up 76% from earnings of $225 million a year ago. Revenues increased 2% to $12.07 billion, ahead of consensus estimates of $11.93 billion.

Lowe’s reported net earnings of $527 million for the quarter ended May 4, a 14.3% increase over the same period a year ago. 

Sales for the quarter increased 7.9% to $13.2 billion from $12.2 billion in the first quarter of 2011.

Comparable-store sales for the quarter increased 2.6%, while comparable-store sales for the U.S. business increased 2.7%.

At its annual meeting, Lowe’s chairman and CEO Robert A. Niblock continued to hammer on the theme of transformation at the nation's second-largest home center chain.

“Making home improvement simple for customers starts with making it simple for our employees by providing them with the right technology and resources,” said Niblock. “Throughout our 65-year history, Lowe’s has changed many times. To be successful in the future, we must transform the shopping experience for customers wherever and however they choose to shop with Lowe’s.”

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe's announced Friday that Larry Stone, president and chief operating officer, will retire June 2 after more than four decades with the home improvement giant.

Stone has served in virtually every leadership position within store operations and merchandising during his 42-year career with the company, and many credit him for Lowe’s success and rise into the No. 2 position among home-improvement retailers
