APA – The Engineered Wood Association has released APA System Report SR-405: Fire Protection of Floors Constructed with Prefabricated Wood I-Joists for Compliance with the 2012 International Residential Code. The report provides several practical systems for design and construction of fire-resistant floor assemblies built with wood I-joists that satisfy the requirements of 2012 IRC Section R501.3.

Calling it a landmark occasion, Shelbyville, Indiana-based Knauf Insulation completed its acquisition of Guardian Insulation. 

The transaction includes Guardian Fiberglass, a leading supplier of insulation products for the construction market, and Guardian Laminated Building Products. Guardian Fiberglass will be integrated into Knauf Insulation and Guardian Laminated Building Products has become Silvercote, LLC.

The deal puts more than double the production capacity of glass mineral wool at Knauf’s disposal.

Terms of the deal were not released.

Eagle Materials, producer of basic building materials from wallboard to cement, reported second quarter revenues of $266.3 million, up 17% from the same three-month period last year.

In the quarter, sales of gypsum wallboard increased 17% to $112.7 million. The company implemented a wallboard price increase effective January 2014 and recently announced a 15% price increase effective in January 2015.

The company’s total net earnings increased 25% to $37.7 million.

Anderson, California-based Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) hired Tom Takach as VP of operations for the windows division of Sierra Pacific Industries – a family owned and operated wood products business. 

In this new position, Takach will oversee manufacturing and operations for Sierra Pacific’s Red Bluff, California Windows Plant as well as the two newly acquired Hurd and Superseal Window and Door plants in Wisconsin.

Citing an increasing demand for low-gloss hardwood floors in the U.S., Bellawood is adding prefinished oil-look matte styles to its product line.

According to the company, low-gloss floors are good for concealing minor scratches, dirt and fur, which is helping fuel the demand in homes with kids and pets.

Bellawood's new line achieves these results without the need to add a high-maintenance oil finish. Instead, the company uses a proprietary topcoat with a UV-cured aluminum oxide finish.

Timber customers in the United Kingdom will now be able to avail themselves of LP's SolidStart Simply Better Stud. 

LP recently launched the product across the pond, touting its ability to minimize plasterboard cracks, nail popping, wall rippling and skirting & cornice gaps.

The Simply Better Stud promises greater uniformity and consistency, greater dimensional stability and added performance. The straight design also reduces the need for a mid-height wall noggin that's normally used with timber studs, acccording to the company.

WOLF has a new collection in its arsenal. Its Poly-Ash Moulding is a new line of exterior trim made with more than 70% recycled material that seeks to correct the limitations of wood and PVC.

The mouldings are made with Boral TruExterior Trim and are manufactured entirely in the U.S. They're also covered by Boral TruExterior Trim's 20-year limited warranty once painted.

Designed with durability in mind, the mouldings offer resistance to rotting, cracking, splitting and termites, and they eliminate the need for end-sealing or special adhesives.

The selection process was extensive for Tyler Patterson, Monkey Bars flooring specialist. “Quickly, I found that Swisstrax provides the best quality, products and durability,” said Patterson.

Caledonia, Wisconsin-based CalStar Products is now offering its brick and Thru-Wall units in a split-face option.

Split-face bricks have a textured face for a more natural, rustic look that mimics the appearance of natural stones. As per the name, the backside of the brick is smooth and straight for ease of installation.

The split-face option will be available for CalStar's 8"x24" facing units and Monarch bricks, as well as the new Ambassador brick.

Johns Manville is unveiling the next generation of its polyisocyanurate product line, which will be known in home improvement circles as ENRGY 3.E.

The main thing setting this new insulation product apart from its predecessor is its ability to meet fire tests and codes without any added halogenated flame retardants. In a word, it's inherently fire-resistant.

To get to that point, Johns Manville added a reactive polymer modifier to boost the foam's cell structure.

Native Trails has come up with a cement and jute fiber material called NativeStone, which resists staining and cracking while maintaining a cool, silky exterior. It also provides a lower price-point for customers who desire the look and feel of concrete but can't afford a custom project.

Roxul, a manufacturer of stone wool insulation products, officially began production in Marshall County, Mississippi, at its first manufacturing facility located in the United States.

The $160 million plant encompasses 600,000 square feet and is located on a 100 acre site in the Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park, approximately 30 miles south of Memphis.  This location will help Roxul maintain its growth in key insulation markets such as residential, commercial building, flat roof, and industrial applications, in the mid and southern USA and Mexico.
