Building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers had a strong month in April compared with a year ago, according to government data released Tuesday.

The U.S. Census Bureau announced that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for April were up 0.1% to $408 billion. The April figure, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences but not for price changes, was up 6.4% from the April 2011 estimate.

Preliminary data from the Monthly Retail Trade Survey shows sales for hardware stores (NAICS 44413) ahead of the same period last year.

Unadjusted sales for hardware stores in February, the latest month of available statistics for NAICS 44413, were $1.417 billion, up from $1.245 billion in February 2011.

The data was released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau along with the Advance Monthly Retail Trade Report.

The monthly sales tally from the U.S. Census Bureau showed gains in February – sales were up 1.1% from the previous month, and up 6.5% from the same month last year.

Leading the sales charge are businesses classified as building material & garden equipment and supplies dealers – NAICS code 444, inclusive of home centers and hardware stores. No other kind of business tracked by the bureau has grown faster in the first two months of 2012.

Advance monthly retail sales for January increased 0.4% to $401.4 billion, according to data released this morning by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The January 2012 figure, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, is up 5.8% compared with the sales estimate from January 2011.

Unadjusted NAICS 44413 hardware store sales hit $1.74 billion in November, up from last year and last month. Elsewhere on the Dashboard, gas prices crept upward.

The U.S. Census Bureau announced today that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for December, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $400.6 billion.

The December figure is up 0.1% from November, and up 6.5% from December 2010.

Total sales for the October through December 2011 period were up 7.0% from the same period a year ago.

The latest report from the U.S. Census Bureau shows retailers classified as hardware stores -- NAICS 44413 -- showed improvement in October.

The Census Bureau's Monthly Retail Trade Report shows the unadjusted sales for hardware stores in October was $1.731 billion, up 10.8% from $1.562 billion in October 2010.

Compared to the prior month, November sales also increased. The month to month gain was 5.4%.

U.S. retail and food services improved slightly in November, but NAICS code 444 retailers took a step backward. 

The U.S. Census Bureau announced Tuesday morning that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for November, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $399.3 billion, an increase of 0.2% from the previous month and 6.7% above November 2010.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for October were $397.7 billion, an increase of 0.5% from the previous month and 7.2% above October 2010. 

Building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers (NAICS 444) increased slightly from month to month, improving to $25.770 billion, up from $25.388 billion in September. Compared with a year ago, sales of 444 category retailers increased 5.6%, according to the report released Tuesday morning.

The U.S. Census Bureau's monthly survey shows unadjusted August sales for both NAICS 444 and 44413 are up compared with last year, and slightly up compared with last month.

Unadjusted hardware store sales in June were estimated at $1.917 billion, up 8.1% from the same month last year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's Monthly Retail Trade Report.

June is the the most recent month of available data for NAICS code 44413, or  "hardware stores."

The figure is down from May's estimate of $2.022 billion, but it's the highest unadjusted figure for June since 2008.

The U.S. Census Bureau announced today that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for July, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $390.4 billion, an increase of 0.5% from the previous month, and 8.5% above July 2010. 

Sales in building material & garden equipment & supplies dealers, NAICS code 444, were an adjusted $25.047 billion in July, down from $25.143 billion in June, but up from $23.291 billion in July 2010.

Unadjusted sales for NAICS 44413 retailers were up to $2.074 billion in May, compared with $1.899 billion in the same month last year.

May is the latest month of available statistics for the hardware store classification. The data was released Thursday morning in the Monthly Retail Trade Report.

May's unadjusted sales were also ahead of April's figure of $1.748 billion.

April sales estimates from the Monthly Retail Trade Report showed NAICS 44413 sales at $1.76 billion, compared with $1.79 billion last year. 

The report from the U.S. Census Bureau showed April hardware store sales -- the latest month of available statistics for the 44413 hardware store classification -- were up 17.3% on an unadjusted basis over March 2011.

The U.S. Census Bureau announced this morning that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for May were $387.1 billion on a seasonally adjusted basis. That's down 0.2% from the previous month, and up 7.7 % compared with May 2010.

Total sales for March, April and May were up 7.5% from the same period a year ago.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported yesterday that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for April were $389.4 billion on a seasonally adjusted basis. That's an increase of 0.5% from the previous month, and up 7.6% compared with April 2010. 

Total sales for the February-through-April  period were up 8.1% from the same period a year ago.

Retail sales picked up slightly in February for NAICS code 444, but the subset of NAICS code 44413 -- hardware stores -- slipped compared with last month and last year.

Gas prices, meanwhile, pushed higher, finishing last week at a national average of $3.82 per gallon of regular.

The Census Bureau's Monthly Retail Trade Report  showed sales for hardware stores -- NAICS code 44413 -- were $1.212 billion on an unadjusted basis in February, the most recent month of available data in this business classification. The February figure is down 6.6% from January's unadjusted sales of $1.298 billion.

In February 2010, unadjusted hardware store sales as calculated by the Census Bureau were $1.235 billion.

The Census Bureau's Monthly Retail Trade Report  showed sales for hardware stores -- NAICS code 44413 -- were $1.298 billion in January, the most recent month of available data in this business classification. That's down 22.9% from December's unadjusted figure of $1.683 billion.

But the rush on extra ice melt and shovels had a positive side: January sales were up 1.6% compared with January 2010.

The U.S. Census Bureau announced that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for February were $387.1 billion on a seasonally adjusted basis. That's up 1.0% from $383.4 billion in the previous month, and up 8.2% from $355.6 billion in the same month last year.

Total sales for the December 2010 through February 2011 period were up 8.2% from the same period a year ago.

Hardware store sales increased slightly in 2010, according to government data released Tuesday.  

The Census Bureau's Monthly & Annual Trade Report showed December sales for hardware stores -- NAICS code 44413 -- reached $1.684 billion in December, the most recent month of available data in this business classification. That unadjusted figure is up 4.5% from the unadjusted figure from December 2009.

For the full year, hardware stores sales were $18.756 billion, up 0.7% from 2009.
