Luxury homes have received a healthy boost from historically low mortgage rates, increased buyer confidence and burgeoning interest from foreign investors looking to capitalize on favorable exchange rates.

One bellwether of the recovery: Toll Brothers, the largest luxury home builder in the United States, reported that fourth-quarter revenues (ended Oct. 31, 2012) were up 48%, and new orders were the highest level seen since 2006.

George’s Hardware, a home-improvement store in Gainesville, Fla., closed at the beginning of December, according to an article in the Gainesville Sun.

Owner Robert George, a second-generation dealer, helped his father and uncle run a Miami hardware store for 42 years. The family relocated to Gainesville and bought Glock’s Hardware in 1967. Eventually, George took over the renamed store from his parents.

Amid signs of a stabilizing home market, Miami-based home builder Lennar reported fourth-quarter sales of $952.7 million, up 11% from the year-ago quarter. Net earnings for the quarter were down slightly from $32.0 million to $30.3 million.

For the full year, revenues were up 1% to $3.1 billion, as net earnings of $92.2 million slipped from $95.3 million.

The Hillman Companies has announced the purchase of certain assets of Micasa Trading Corp., a Miami-based based producer of the OOK brand of picture hangers and related products. Annual revenues of Micasa for 2010 exceeded $15 million.

Established in 1964 by David Weck, Micasa serves home centers and hardware retailers, as well as art galleries and the professional market.

The S&P/Case-Shiller Index, a leading indicator of U.S. housing prices, showed a 0.2% increase for its 10- and 20-city composites in August versus July 2011.  In addition, 16 of the 20 MSAs and both composites posted improved annual returns compared with July’s data; Los Angeles and Miami saw no change in annual returns in August, and Atlanta and Las Vegas saw their annual rates of change fall deeper into negative territory.

Banner Supply Co., the Miami-based drywall distributor, has agreed to pay $53 million to settle a class-action lawsuit claiming it sold defective drywall imported from China. The settlement offer, which is still subject to court approval, will be deposited into an escrow account for plaintiffs who claim their houses need remedial work after being built with toxic drywall.

Banner and its insurers deny any wrongdoing, pointing out that the company never manufactured the drywall it sold or delivered.

The S&P/Case-Shiller Index, a closely watched indicator for the new housing market, has reported a monthly increase in prices for its 10- and 20-city composites for the first time in eight months. The composites were up 0.8% and 0.7%, respectively, in April versus March.

However, both indices are lower than a year ago, with the 10-city composite down 3.1% and the 20-city composite off 4.0% from its April 2010 levels.

Miami-based home builder Lennar Corp. posted a profit of $27.4 million in the first quarter ended Feb. 28. That compares with a loss of $6.5 million in the same quarter last year.

Revenues were down 3% to $558.0 million, as the company's gross margin on home sales improved 80 basis points to 20.0%.

A moving-truck rental deal with Penske Truck Rental has been expanded from its original pilot program in Richmond, Va., to include five Miami, Fla.-area Home Depot stores, according to a report from Dow Jones.

The Atlanta-based retailer has made no announcement regarding the potential roll-out of the pilot program to more stores.

Revenues for the quarter ended Nov. 30 were $761.3 million, down 11.1% from $856.4 million for the same period in 2009.
