Kansas-based roofing company DaVinci Roofscapes is commemorating 15 years of manufacturing its polymer slate and shake roofing systems, with a new facility marking the company’s growth.

The company, which took root in 1999 in Kansas City, recently relocated to a larger facility in Lenexa.

Coleman Equipment of Bonner Springs, Kan., recently bought Scott’s Tractor & Equipment of Smithville, Mo., and O’Dell Tractor Company of Independence, Mo.

All of the staff at Scott’s Tractor has been moved to Coleman Equipment. Scott Kolbeck, owner of Scott’s Tractor, has accepted the position of Coleman Equipment Corporate sales manager. John Walker, salesman and assistant manager at Scotts for 13 years, has accepted the position of store manager for the Smithville location.

Chanute, Kan.-based Cleaver Farm & Home was recognized by Chicago-based True Value Co. as one of 13 “Best Hardware Store in Town” honorees.

Accepting the award at a True Value hosted ceremony were Chris and Jason Cleaver. 

The retailer converted to the co-op’s Destination True Value format in spring 2013, and the owners see continued community support along with opportunities for growth. 

The farm-and-ranch segment has been an area of focus for the wholesaler, which describes the segment as its fastest growing.

Kwikset -- which is part of Spectrum Brands Holdings -- is sponsoring Richard Childress Racing and driver Ryan Newman during the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Season this year.

Per the partnership, Kwikset will be the primary sponsor and paint scheme for Newman's car during the Kansas Race in Kansas City on May 10. The Kwisket logo will also be displayed on Newman's No. 31 car for every race this season.

The scent of freshly baked sugar cookies helped a Wichita, Kan., flooring retailer earn respect from its peers. 

Star Flooring, an independently owned shop in Wichita, Kan., took home the Gold Standard Award from the World Floor Covering Association.

The award includes a $5,000 check.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware appointed a new chief for Westlake Ace Hardware, the 85-store Midwestern chain.

Tom Knox, 59, was named president and CEO of Westlake, which is owned by the co-op -- and which is also the co-op's largest member. Knox wil be leaving his role as VP retail business development, training and supply at Ace's corporate offices and take on his new role in Lenexa, Kan.

Atchison, Kan.-based hardware distributor Blish-Mize Co. announced that Jonathan D. Mize has been appointed CEO, succeeding his father, John H. Mize. 

For the past few years, the younger Mize has served as president and COO and previously served in other officer capacities. He will be the fifth generation of the Mize family to hold the title of CEO. He also serves as president & COO of Hardware House, a subsidiary of Blish-Mize Co.

Construction is now underway for a new Merriam, Kan. IKEA location. With the erection of the steel structure underway, the building is slated for completion in fall of 2014.

Now in its third year, HCN's annual list of high performers recognizes hardware stores -- one from each state -- that are outstanding in their field. Meanwhile, HCN Daily will work its way across the country with mini profiles, continuing this week with Nebraska, Kansa and Iowa.

Bart and Diana Tyler, proprieters of Kelloggs & Lawrence in Katonah, N.Y., and DeWayne Tripp, owner of Hinton (Okla.) Hardware joined an elite crowd in 2013: HCN Hardware Store All-Stars. Their stores made the list, along with 48 other worthy retailers, one from each state.

Lenexa, Kan.-based Westlake Ace Hardware will open its newest store -- store No. 86 -- in West Plains, Mo., Aug. 16.

The new Westlake Ace Hardware will serve as the anchor for the West Plains Marketplace shopping center. The new location marks the second store incorporating Westlake's new store design and layout that uses construction materials and a design approach intended to provide an organic and modern feel, more natural light from garage-style doors and skylights, a wood and metal facade, and polished concrete floors.

Home furnishings giant IKEA will break ground on Tuesday, July 9, for its Kansas City-area store in Merriam, Kan.

When the new 359,000-sq.-ft. store opens fall 2014 on 19 acres along the eastern side of Interstate-35 and Johnson Drive, it will be the 40th IKEA store in the United States. 

This future IKEA store will feature three model home interiors, 50 room-settings, a supervised children’s play area and a 450-seat restaurant.

No matter how you slice them, the numbers of the HCN Top 300 Industry Scoreboard reflect the rising housing market, increased spending on the home and an easy comparison with the previous year's performance.

Of the leading 300 home channel retailers, 277 show positive sales in the most recently completed finished fiscal year, and 12 show declines. Eleven others are listed as flat.

Overland Park, Kan.-based Nuts and Bolts Hardware announced the site of its next location: Odessa, Mo., on U.S. Highway 40. 

The new store, expected to open in April, will be the chain’s sixth location.

Home improvement retailer Menards is postponing its plans to enter the Kansas City market over concerns that “economic conditions will worsen,” according to an article in The Kansas City Star.

Company spokesman Jeff Abbott told the newspaper the Eau Claire, Wis.-based company will not be building planned units in Belton, Mo.; Kansas City Northland and Overland Park, Kan.

Ace Hardware Corp. acquired Lenexa, Kan.-based Westlake Ace Hardware for $88 million.

Westlake was named the HCN 2011 Retailer of the Year, and was featured in the May 2011 issue of Home Channel News. Since 2006, the company was owned by a private equity firm -- Goldner Hawn Johnson and Morrison.

Jim’s Builders Hardware in Wichita, Kan., is closing after more than three decades, according to an article in The Wichita Eagle.

“We’re just closing because of the economy,” owner Jeanne McKiernan told the paper. “It’s really a melancholy situation. We didn’t want to close.”

Black & Decker is partnering with Richard Petty Motorsports and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Marcos Ambrose. The Black & Decker-branded No. 9 Ford Fusion will race at four primary races: Kansas on Oct. 21, Martinsville on Oct. 28, Phoenix on Nov. 11 and Homestead-Miami on Nov. 18.

According to an article in the Garden City (Kan.) Telegram, a Menards will break ground this month on the perimeter of the city.

The paper described the new project as the first phase of a $67.2 million retail shopping center. Leading the development is Charlotte, N.C.-based commercial real estate firm Collett & Associates. The 60-acre development is expected to eventually include a Sam’s Club, but not until a later phase of construction.

Tulsa, Okla.-based Mill Creek has plans to open a showroom, door shop and truss manufacturing plant in northern Wichita, Kan., according to an article in the Wichita Eagle.

Jeff Dunn, Mill Creek’s president, told the newspaper he’s “cautiously optimistic” about the city and wants to position the company for the inevitable upturn in new-home building.
