The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had declined in May, decreased again in June. The Index now stands at 58.5 (1985=100), down from 61.7 in May. The Present Situation Index decreased to 37.6 from 39.3. The Expectations Index declined to 72.4 from 76.7 last month.

Whirlpool Corp., the Benton Harbor, Mich., appliance maker reported sales of $4.4 billion for its first fiscal quarter, a 3% rise over sales of $4.3 billion in the first quarter of 2010. Earnings for the worldwide manufacturer were $169 million for the quarter, compared with $164 million a year ago.

"Our first-quarter results reflect our ongoing cost reduction efforts and continued innovation investments, which helped to mitigate significant material cost inflation," said Jeff Fettig, chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corp.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index increased slightly to 65.4 in April, up from 63.8 in March, and up from 57.7 in April 2010.

According to an article in the New York Times, the housing crash is hitting cities once thought to be stable. Case in point: Seattle.

Home prices in Seattle last year had a bigger decline than home prices in Las Vegas, the article reports.

Listening to a company’s quarterly earnings conference can be the equivalent of watching a CEO read a PowerPoint presentation, followed by a group of analysts grilling him on EBIT margins, payout ratios and basis points. Or it can be like panning for gold, with nuggets surfacing about store openings and closings, new products launches, new accounts with retail customers or “terminated” relationships with former customers. Competitors even talk about each other — sometimes by name — with a little prompting from analysts.
