No matter how you slice them, the numbers of the HCN Top 300 Industry Scoreboard reflect the rising housing market, increased spending on the home and an easy comparison with the previous year's performance.

Of the leading 300 home channel retailers, 277 show positive sales in the most recently completed finished fiscal year, and 12 show declines. Eleven others are listed as flat.

A new agreement with Jackson Hewitt Tax Service will keep tax preparation in the Sears lineup.

For Sears stores, H&R Block is out, and Jackson Hewitt Tax Service is in. The Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based retailer announced the agreement with Jackson Hewitt that will enable tax preparation services both in-store and online.

The service will begin in January 2013.

According to an article in the Chicago Sun Times, Sears Holdings Corp. will lay off employees from a variety of departments at its Hoffman Estates, Ill., headquarters.

The layoffs will not affect the retailer's recently approved tax credit from the state of Illinios. The $150 million payroll tax credit take effect next year, and -- according to the article -- requires a minimum of 4,250 headquarters employees.

A list compiled by 24/7 Wall St., based on both shareholder and consumer satisfaction, placed Sears in ninth place on the Ten Most Hated Companies in America. The Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based company was one of two retailers – the other being Best Buy at no. 6 – that made the publication’s list. Facebook ranked first on the list, followed by American Airlines and AT&T.

After researching a possible move to Ohio or Texas, Sears yesterday applauded the Illinois General Assembly for its bipartisan support of legislation that Sears said would allow it to maintain its headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

An article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that Sears officials were scouting sites in Ohio for a possible headquarters move.

Although the Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based retailer is considering a headquarters move, no decision to move has been made. Candidates are sites in Ohio and Texas.

Losses at Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears Holdings Corp. widened in the second quarter ended July 30. The company's net loss was $146 million, compared with a loss of $39 million in the same quarter last year.

Total revenues decreased to $10.3 billion for the quarter, down slightly from $10.5 billion for the quarter ended July 31, 2010. Kmart's comparable-store sales were flat, and Sears Domestic comparable store sales declined 1.2%.

Columbus, Ohio-based Dorcy, a flashlight and battery manufacturer, is introducing DieHard branded alkaline batteries to the market. 

The DieHard brand on an alkaline battery was on display at the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas. 

"It's a natural," said Dorcy president and CEO Tom Beckett. "The DieHard brand has enormous goodwill, and this launch is a natural addition to our core business."

DieHard is a brand owned by Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears Holdings. Dorcy is a longtime supplier of flashlights to Sears.
