Winona, Minnesota-based Fastenal Company reported steady progress for the second quarter of 2014, with sales and earnings both positive.

Net sales for the three-month period ended June 30, 2014 were $949.9 million, up 12.1% from the same period in 2013.

Net earnings came in at $130.5 million, an increase of 7.9% from last year's $121.0 million in earnings.

The company largely attributed the boost to higher unit sales and its recent investment in leadership and training, as well as in distribution and internal manufacturing capabilities.

Appliance parts distributor Marcone Canada hired Peter Szachlewicz as its first president. 

Marcone Supply, the company's U.S. counterpart, established a presence in Canada with its 2010 buyout of APWagner. Since that time, Marcone Canada has experienced growth in both its retail and wholesale operations, the company said, selling authorized OEM appliance parts, HVAC components and property maintenance supplies.

A grant agreement between the U.S. Trade and Development Agency and Chinese company Midea will see Honeywell work to reduce the impact Midea's refrigerators and freezers have on the environment.

Honeywell will work with Midea, which manufactures appliances, to put its line of Solstice products into wider use. The main Solstice product that Midea will use is Honeywell's Liquid Blowing Agent, which expands insulation in appliances and has a lower global warming potential than more widely-used agents.

Building on its first pneumatic stapler, Arrow Fasteners has introduced a line of pneumatic tools. In addition to the PT50 stapler, the New Jersey-based company's line of pneumatic tools includes a brad nailer, pin nailer and an angled nailer, all for use in profession and DIY projects.

“Each one of these tools offers a quick and easy solution that empowers people to conquer home projects simply and easily,” arrows marketing and product development director, Frank Foster, said.

Customers in Utah, Nevada and Wyoming can now buy NuvohH2O's water softeners at certain Ace Hardware stores, the supplier announced Thursday. 

Instead of using salt like most water softeners, NuvoH2O's products work with the help of a citrus agent and don't require electricity, brine tank, drain or soft water loop to work/. The absence of salt reduces buildup on fixtures and shower doors.

Ace Hardware affiliate Klinker's Lumber & Building Supply of Waverly City, Ohio, was recognized by the state's House of Representatives for opening a new paint studio in May.

The store's paint studio — essentially a remodeled and rethought version of its paint section — now sells Valspar paints, including their Aspire and Professional line of paints, in addition to the Ace line of paint. The paint studio will also allow employees to mix custom paint colors to match customers' color palettes.

Though sales were up 3% and income increased 1% for WD-40 Company in the third quarter, shares for the lubricants and cleaner supplier were down more than 6% Thursday morning after management narrowed the full-year guidance.

Net sales for the quarter came in at $95.7 million, up from $93.1 million in the same quarter last year. This was largely carried by sales of multi-purpose maintenance products; sales of homecare and cleaning products decreased 1%.

Uncertainty at the West Coast ports has caused a rush of activity, according to a monthly tracking service.

Import volume at major U.S. container ports is expected to total 1.5 million containers this month, says the Global Port Tracker from the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates. That’s the highest monthly volume in at least five years and follows a trend of unusually high import levels that began this spring as labor strife pushed retailers to import merchandise ahead of any potential problems.

The most recent "Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Kitchen Cabinets" survey by J.D. Power found IKEA to be a clear winner among customers.

According to the survey, IKEA ranked highest overall, scoring 789 on a 1,000-point scale. 

The study measures satisfaction according to design, ordering and delivery, price, operational performance and warranty. IKEA did best in the pricing and warranty categories.

Michael Jones stepped into the role of Lowe’s chief customer officer by stepping up to the microphone. Jones, who replaced the retiring Greg Bridgeford earlier this year, walked analysts and investors through Lowe’s performance, which saw a comp-store sales increase of 0.9%.

A potential fire hazard is behind the recall of the Single Stage Snow Thrower from All Power America.

Menards stores and independent hardware retailers sold the products from September 2012 through December 2013 for about $200.

Hazard: According to the recall announcement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, exposure to Chinese gasoline for extended periods of time while testing the product overseas caused the carburetor needle to become corroded and allow fuel to leak, posing a fire hazard to consumers.
