Lowe’s generated positive comp-store sales in all of its product categories in the second quarter. And even as it faced a strong comparison to the prior-year’s quarter, lawn and garden led the way.

Those were among the insights provided by Lowe’s executives during their second-quarter earnings report, in which the Mooresville, North Carolina-based company reported sales and earnings growth.

SolarWorld, the Camarillo, California-based subsidiary of Germany-based SolarWorld AG, recalled certain solar systems with copper grounding lugs.

SolarWorld solar panels installed with bare-copper grounding lugs can corrode which could result in a faulty ground circuit, posing an electric shock, electrocution or fire hazard, according to the recall announcement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. 

The firm has received one report of corrosion related to the bare copper lugs. No injuries have been reported.

North Wilkesboro, North Carolina-based Window World is promoting its status as a seven-time recipient of the Good Housekeeping Seal.

Any product that has earned the Seal is backed by Good Housekeeping's limited warranty, meaning if it is found to be defective within the first two years after purchase, Good Housekeeping will replace or repair the product or refund its purchase price. 

Earlier this summer, Window World received the ranking of "Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Windows and Doors" from J.D. Power for the second consecutive year.

July saw the highest level of existing-home sales for the entire year of 2014 so far, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.15 million, according to the National Association of Realtors.

This is up 2.4% from June's downwardly revised rate of 5.03 million. However, sales are still 4.3% below last July's 5.38 million-unit level (also that year's peak).

In terms of single-family homes, sales were up 2.7% on a monthly basis to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.55 million. This is still 4.2% below last year's pace.

The new Profile series of freestanding ranges from GE will allow homeowners to turn the oven on in between games of Candy Crush, among other things.

The Wi-Fi-enabled series of gas and electric ranges can be controlled remotely by the GE Brillion smartphone app.

“We’re expanding our line of connected appliances to make life easier while you’re on the go,” GE Product Manager Jonathan Sprigler said. “Consumers expect more things to be accessible through their phones, and GE is enabling them to have the control they want.”

The Toro Company declared that it was well on its way to meeting its previously stated 2014 goals upon the release of its third-quarter earnings report Thursday.

Sales for the quarter were up 11.3% year-over-year to what Toro referred to as a "record $567.5 million," riding a wave of strong retail demand across its various segments.

Net earnings of $50.0 million were also up in comparison to last year's $40.1 million.

Door manufacturer Masonite International announced Thursday that it would be restructuring its Masonite Israel subsidiary in order to avoid a court-appointed trustee being placed in charge of the company.

In order to restructure, the company requested a stay from the Israeli courts after evaluating the company’s options. The Israel company is currently operating at a loss, and constituted under 1% of Masonite International’s sales in the last fiscal year.

Aurora, Ill.-based LBM dealer Alexander Lumber Co. named Russell Kathrein as CEO and president.

Kathrein has 25 years of experience in the lumber and building material industry, including senior management positions at 84 Lumber, BMC West, and most recently, ProBuild.

Alexander Lumber operates 20 yards in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin, along with two truss plants and a counter-top facility.

Topping the list of appliance retailers up for review, hhgregg was honored with the highest score (of 819) in the J.D. Power Appliance Retailer Customer Satisfaction Study.

The annual J.D. Power survey uses criteria such as sales staff, merchandise, price and installation service to measurecustomer satisfaction with some of the country's largest appliance retailers. This year's study surveyed more than 2,900 customers who purchased a laundry or kitchen appliance in the previous 12 months.

On Wednesday morning, it was Lowe's turn to deliver strong quarterly earnigns.

And the Mooresville, North Carolina-based retail giant did just that. The company reported net earnings of $1.04 billion for the quarter ended Aug. 1, marking a 10.4% increase over the second quarter last year. Sales for the quarter were up 5.7% to $16.6 billion, as comparable-store sales were up 4.4%.

"We were able to recover most of the outdoor product sales missed in the first quarter due to unfavorable weather conditions," said Robert Niblock, president and CEO.

The Home Depot’s President of U.S. Retail Craig Menear had plenty of positive numbers to discuss from a merchandising standpoint after the company reported comp-store sales growth of 5.8% in the second quarter.

All three U.S. divisions had positive comps, and also beat their sales plan, Menear said. Additionally, all departments had positive comps for the quarter, in which Home Depot reported sales of $23.8 billion.
