No matter how you slice them, the numbers of the HCN Top 300 Industry Scoreboard reflect the rising housing market, increased spending on the home and an easy comparison with the previous year's performance.

Of the leading 300 home channel retailers, 277 show positive sales in the most recently completed finished fiscal year, and 12 show declines. Eleven others are listed as flat.

Paint may be a very emotional decision for consumers, but in the retail world, it’s a simple business plan: If you want to sell a lot of paint, dedicate enough space to it, assign a full-time, well-trained sales associate to the paint desk, and carry more than two lines of paint. One of those brands should cater to the pros. Find a way to keep the contractors separated from the homeowners, which is not all that difficult; professional painters don’t like to sit on sofas surrounded by tasseled pillows.

From the outside, the Mount Prospect, Ill., True Value hardware store looks a lot like any other True Value store. It’s only 2 years old, so the sign above the door appears extra bright red and white.

When you walk through the entrance, it still looks a lot like most of the Chicago-based co-op’s fashion-forward Destination True Value format stores. At 12,600 sq. ft., it’s a little bigger than most. The registers are ringing up front, and a racetrack is punctuated by 38 endcaps promoting product, as well as ideas for the home.

Simpson Pinewood Hardware held its grand opening on Aug. 22 after a soft opening last month, according to an article in The Item. 

Now operated by the third generation of the Simpson family, the Sumter, S.C., store closed in 2011 but has since undergone a remodeling and expansion. It will now carry lawn and garden and lumber.

Civic leaders in Barrington, Ill., 32 miles northwest of Chicago, approved an economic incentive and special use permit sought by an applicant for an Ace Hardware store, according to an article in the Chicago Daily Herald. The agreement allows the hardware store to recoup up to $13,000 per year in municipal sales tax for its first five years. Anything above that would be paid to the village as usual.

Memphis, Tenn.-based distributor Orgill is a big believer in its model stores and their ability to inspire dealers to roll out new products and planograms. 

At this year’s Fall Market in Las Vegas, Orgill demonstrated four separate store types full of the latest in merchandise adjacenies, signage and retail ideas: Copper Canyon Hardware, Four Corners Hardware & Supply, North Lake Lumber and Frontier Farm & Hardware.

A cab mob has hit another hardware store — this time Crowder Bros. Ace Hardware in Lakeland, Fla., according to an article in The Ledger. The hardware store had been hurting from the weak economy.

Long-Lewis Hardware, a distributor based in Birmingham, Ala., is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. A division of Long-Lewis Inc., Long-Lewis Hardware serves hardware stores, home centers, agricultural retailers, industrial/commercial dealers and lumberyards in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. The other division is a Ford automobile dealership, one of the oldest in the nation.

Orchard Supply Hardware reported first-quarter net sales of $155.0 million, down 5.37%, as comparable-store sales declined 3.1%. The company posted a loss of $4.5 million, compared with a loss of $1.0 million in the first quarter of 2011.

The company, which describes itself as a retail concept that occupies the space between the big box and the hardware store, still expects to turn its comp-store sales into the black for the full year.

Central Network Retail Group, a chain of 36 home improvement centers, has opened a new NFL Home Center store in Gautier, Miss., on the site of the former Coast Building Supply.

The store has a 10,000-sq.-ft. sales floor with an assortment of hardware, paint, electrical, plumbing, tools, lawn and garden, and home organization items. Additionally, the store has a full-service lumber and building materials yard.

But for the last three years, Hardware Plus, a Do it Best dealer in Osceola, Ind., has been making any number of unusual motorized vehicles, according to an article in the South Bend Tribune.

Rocky’s Ace Hardware will open a new store in Westfield, Mass., during a grand-reopening ceremony May 19.

The new concept store measures 12,000 sq. ft. and is located at the corners of Main and Free Streets. The new store reflects the chain’s “Re-Discover Rocky’s” concept, described by the chain as a hardware store and more.

The May 1 to 3 event at the Las Vegas Convention Center will see a few new twists.

For the first time at the show, a “Made in the USA Pavilion” will showcase domestic-made products.
