After a slow first quarter, Fortune Brands and Home Security saw a second-quarter 10% year-over-year sales bump. The company also announced that it had acquired Sentry Safe for $117.5 million.

In the second quarter, Fortune Brands reported $1.4 billion in sales, and $136.6 million in operating income before charges and gains — a $20.1 million increase over the second quarter of 2013. The total company’s pre-gains operating income grew by 28%.

The outlook for home repair and remodeling is fueling Fortune Brands Home & Security’s optimism for 2014. 

The Deerfield, Ill.-based multi-purpose home product company reported fourth-quarter sales of $1.10 billion, up 16% from the same quarter last year. Net income was $64.6 million, up from $18.6 million in last year’s quarter.

Net income was $64.2 million, up from $47.9 million in last year's quarter.

Fortune Brands Home & Security has made a strategic move to strengthen its position as the self-titled industry leader in cabinetry through its acquisition of WoodCrafters Home Products, completed on Thursday, June 20.

WoodCrafters, a privately owned manufacturer of bathroom vanities and bathroom sink tops with annual sales of $230 million, will become part of Fortune's Kitchen & Bath Cabinetry segment as a business unit of MasterBrand Cabinets. WoodCrafters will retain its current management structure, staff, operations and locations.

Fortune Brands Home & Security (FBHS), which intends to spin off from Fortune Brands today, named John Morikis to the company's board of directors, effective Dec. 1.

Morikis is president and chief operating officer of The Sherwin-Williams Co., an $8 billion global leader in the paint and coatings industry. He was elected COO of Sherwin-Williams in 2006.

The spinoff is part of the company’s proposed plan to separate its three businesses by spinning off Home & Security in a tax-free transaction, selling or spinning off its Acushnet golf business, and remaining a pure-play spirits company to be named Beam.

Simonton Windows, the vinyl window and patio door manufacturer, has finalized plans to relocate the company’s corporate office to Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio. The transition -- from Parkersburg, W.Va. -- is set to be complete in June 2011. The company is part of the Home and Security business of Fortune Brands Inc.
