Organizations around the world lose an estimated 5% of annual revenues to fraudulent activities, according to a study conducted by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). Forty-two percent of fraudsters were found to be employees, 38 percent managers and 18 percent owners/executives, according to the 2012 Report to the Nations on Occupational Fraud & Abuse.

Christian Miller Snavely, Jr., the chairman emeritus of Snavely Forest Products , World War II veteran and past chairman of the North American Wholesale Lumber Association died Oct. 24. He was 88.

Snavely is remembered by friends and colleagues as a generous and well-respected business leader. He was elected chairman of the industry trade association, NAWLA, which honored him with the prestigious Mulrooney Award for outstanding contributions to the forest products industry.

Denis Abrams, CEO of paint maker Benjamin Moore, was fired from his job over a  dinner cruise to Bermuda that was charged to the company’s tab, according to an article in the New York Post. A group of officials from parent company Berkshire Hathaway, owned by billionaire Warren Buffet, showed up at the paint company’s Montvale, N.J., office two weeks ago and escorted Abrams from the building, the Post reported.

ProBuild Holdings, the nation’s largest pro dealer, has announced a restructuring that will eliminate several high level management positions, lay off a number of people, and institute a hiring freeze at its Denver headquarters. 

In an internal memo obtained by Home Channel News, ProBuild’s CEO Rob Marchbank outlined the new leadership and reporting structure of the Denver-based company. The executive VP operations layer of management will be eliminated, and all senior VPs of operations will report directly to Marchbank.

After investigating pricing practices among foreign appliance makers, the U.S. Commerce Department ruled on March 19 that two South Korean manufacturers and four Mexican producers were guilty of “dumping” their bottom-mount refrigerators on the U.S. market by selling them at less than fair value. The case was opened in response to a complaint filed by U.S. manufacturer Whirlpool.

Consumer research from Port Washington, N.Y.-based NPD Group shows some positive movement in consumer sentiment in January, but concerns linger.

The January figure for the NPD U.S. Economic Perception Indicator rose to 40.0 on a scale of 0 -- "very concerned" -- to 100 -- "very confident." The figure is an improvement upon 37.4 recorded in December, but it is below the year-ago figure of 41.4:

Orlando, Fla. -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, addressing a crowd of home builders on the last day of the International Builders' Show here, did his best to explain how low mortgage rates -- his chief weapon to stimulate the housing market -- have fallen short of their goals. But Bernanke’s speech before a crowd of more than 200 attendees was not an apologie; on the contrary, Bernanke seemed a little frustrated about a lack of action in other government and business sectors and seemed worried about the overall effect of the housing crisis on the general economy.

What began quite innocently as a pet project turned into a national movement for Anders Lewendal, the Bozeman, Mont., builder who has since gained wide acclaim for constructing a house made entirely from U.S.-made products.

Initially, Lewendal set out to build an “efficient, affordable and environmentally healthy” home for a client whose daughter has cystic fibrosis. In researching the building materials and parts required for the project, Lewendal was struck with this idea: Why not go for all-American parts and materials.

After analyzing several years of data, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) has announced that it overestimated the number of existing homes sold between 2007 and 2010 by 14.3%. This means that 2.9 million fewer homes were sold in the United States during that time period than previously thought.

Analysts were expecting a boost in November's residential construction data, but not this much of a boost.

The Commerce Department's residential construction report released Tuesday morning showed housing starts at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 685,000 -- that's 9.3% higher than the revised October estimate of 627,000 (revised from a previously released figure of 628,000). It's also the highest level of starts since April 2010. 

Compared with last year's near-record low, total housing starts were up 24.3%.

Home furnishings retailer IKEA said it plugged in its solar energy system at its store in Baltimore.

The 77,300-sq.-ft. PV array consists of a 618.2-kW system, built with 2,576 panels.  IKEA Baltimore’s program will produce approximately 823,500 kWh of clean electricity annually, the equivalent of reducing 626 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), eliminating the emissions of 111 cars or powering 71 homes yearly, according to the company.

HD Supply reported $2.1 billion in net sales for its third fiscal quarter, a 10.7% increase over sales of $1.87 billion during the same quarter of 2010.

Net loss for the quarter, which ended Oct. 30, was $105 million, compared with a loss of $99 million in the corresponding quarter of 2010. Operating income improved $31 million to $78 million.

Central Garden & Pet, a leading supplier of seeds, pottery, insecticides and other outdoor living products, reported net sales for its fourth fiscal quarter of $376.9 million, a 9% increase over the comparable period in fiscal 2010. The company's operating loss was $4.6 million for both the fourth quarter of 2011 and 2010.

Sales gains were driven by the garden products segment, which reported net sales for the quarter of $165.1 million, a gain of 24% over the fourth quarter of 2010.
