DOL guidance may increase FMLA requests for care of adult children

As a result of a U.S. Department of Labor administrator’s interpretation (No. 2013-1) of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) on Jan. 14, employers can expect more requests from employees seeking protection under the act to care for adult children unable to care for themselves.

December employment situation holds steady

The Employment Situation Report released Friday morning showed the unemployment rate was unchanged for the month of December, holding steady at 7.8%.

The data from the Department of Labor showed a gain of 155,000 jobs, slightly higher than the consensus forecast.

Unemployment rate slips to 7.7%

The November unemployment rate released this morning declined from 7.9% to 7.7% as more people stopped looking for work, the Labor Department said. 

The mixed bag of data showed that the U.S. economy added 146,000 jobs in November -- that's below the average of 151,000 per month since the beginning of this year.

The Labor Department's official unemployment rate fell to 8.8% from 8.9%. The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence index, however, fell to 63.4 in March, compared with 72.0 in February.
