Lowe’s has signed an agreement with Microsoft Corp. to implement Microsoft Office 365 across more than 1,745 stores, 200,000 employees and its corporate offices in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Office 365 will help the home improvement retailer improve customer service by providing collaboration tools to increase communication among its stores and employees. The technology will be available for Lowe's employees soon and will help customers tap into the collective expertise of Lowe’s work force.

A True Value store in Walnut, Calif., a suburb of eastern Los Angeles, has begun its liquidation sale and will close within the next 90 days, according to an article in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

Walnut True Value Hardware has been operated by Stuart Tielens, a 64-year-old businessman who eventually succumbed to his customers’ lack of spending from the poor economy and competition from a Home Depot that moved in two years ago.

The Valspar Applied Science and Technology Center will employ more than 200 scientists to support the continued growth of Valspar in Asia Pacific and Valspar’s research and development on a global basis.

According to an article in the Wichita Business Journal, Worthington Industries has no plans for workforce reductions in its new Maize, Kan., plant. 

Columbus, Ohio-based Worthington took over the Maize plant, where pressure cylinders are made, from Coleman Co. According to the newspaper, Worthington bought the plant for $23 million. It has about 70 employees.

Home Depot will open a new customer support call center in Kennesaw, Ga., not far from its Atlanta headquarters, in 2012. 

The story first appeared in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and was confirmed by a Home Depot spokesman yesterday. 

The customer support center will start out with 400 employees and grow to about 700 employees by 2015. It will be located in the Chastain Meadows commercial park.

Power Home Remodeling Group, an East Coast-based provider of exterior home renovations, has expanded its operations to Marlborough, Mass., where it will continue to serve the greater Boston metropolitan area. Power has already hired more than 50 employees in the Boston region and plans to create at least 100 jobs in 2011 and another 100 to 250 in 2012, the company said in a press release.

Louisiana-Pacific Corp. has announced that its Dawson Creek, B.C., mill will curtail production of oriented strand board (OSB) beginning Aug. 25. The mill will continue to manufacture LP TechShield Radiant Barrier Sheathing to support its customers' needs in West Coast markets. 

The Dawson Creek OSB mill was constructed in 1987 and currently employs 114 people. After winterization and preparations for press shutdown are completed, about 26 employees will be retained to operate the TechShield Radiant Barrier line, and maintain the plant and equipment.

Onex Corp. announced the plan yesterday, anticipating Jeld-Wen was positioned well for a global recovery in housing.

Georgia-Pacific has announced it is in the final construction phase of a nearly complete oriented strand board (OSB) facility in Clarendon, S.C. The mill was part of the acquisition last May from Grant Forest Products that also included an operating plant at Allendale, S.C., and another operating plant at Englehart, Ontario. The acquisition totaled approximately $400 million.

In the 1980s, when Lowe’s decided to change from a chain of southeastern contractor yards to a nationwide big-box retailer, the company knew it wouldn’t happen overnight. But a steady vision, stable leadership and good relations with Wall Street made the goal a reality. Today, the North Carolina-based company has more than 1,725 warehouse-sized stores in all 50 states plus Canada and Mexico. 

Now it’s time for another change.

For the first time since 2005, The Home Depot and Lowe’s Cos. both delivered positive comparable-store sales in all four quarters of 2010. Last year was also the first year both companies showed an increase in full-year sales since 2005. 


These trends are strong evidence that the worst of the economic cycle has passed for the two home improvement retail giants.

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe's is hiring 50,000 seasonal employees to handle the spring rush. That's on top of the 8,000 to 10,00 weekend employees that the company is bringing on board permanently as part of its recently announced restructuring.

A Lowe's spokeswoman confirmed the figures, which had previously been reported in various media outlets.
