Is Tile Shop the fastest-growing specialty building product retailer in the country? Or does it just seem like it?

In the span of a month, Tile Shop locations cropped up in Tulsa, Danbury, San Antonio and Oklahoma City. And since it went public in August 2012, the Minneapolis-based retailer has been expanding aggressively. Twenty stores opened in 2013, debuting in new markets amid a beefed-up corporate infrastructure.

Additionally, executive chairman Howard Cohen is stepping down, though he (and Lewis) will both serve as members of the board. Roy Haley, who has been on the board since May 2013, will take Cohen's place as non-executive chairman.

Samsung has set its sights on a fairly ambitious goal: to become the world's largest appliance manufacturer by 2015.

According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Samsung has some pretty formidable competition here in the U.S., including current leader Whirlpool. However, it's the fast-growing appliance brand in the country, managing to jump from 2.3% market share to 10.5% over the last five years.

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe's reported a solid third quarter, with sizable gains in earnings and sales.

The company's net earnings increased 26.0% to $499 million. Sales for the quarter jumped 7.3% to $13.0 billion, up from $12.1 billion in the year ago quarter. Comparable sales for the quarter increased 6.2%.

As upstart home goods e-tailer Wayfair gears up for a likely IPO in 2014 or 2015, Michael Fleisher will step in as the company's new CFO to help speed the process along.

Fleisher, who is leaving his post as Warner Music Group vice chairman, replaces Nicholas Malone, who is remaining at the company as chief administration officer.

J.D. Power and Associates has released its annual kitchen and laundry appliance satisfaction surveys, with warranty playing an increasingly important role in the minds of customers.

Performance and product-specific features have long been the most influential factors in calculating these statistics, but warranty and price have been trending upwards in importance. Warranty now contributes to about 10% of the overall satisfaction score across all categories, a jump of two percentage points over the last three years.

In the fourth quarter, Home Depot had a field day in its quarterly sales comparisons with rival Lowe's — a 13.9% gain compared with a 5% decline. However, the field wasn't level.

Home Depot had an extra week in its 2012 quarter, while Lowe's was operating with one fewer week. The difference created a nearly $2 billion swing, as the extra week benefited Home Depot to the tune of $1.2 billion, and deflated Lowe's by about $766 million.

The Home Depot and Lowe's are adjusting their lineups in their appliance assortments. At Home Depot, Samsung joins the fray, while Lowe's introduced LG.

At Home Depot, Samsung Electronics America products will be available to be ordered in store locations nationwide and on Homedepot.com beginning Dec. 9. "Adding Samsung's line of home appliances to the roster really bolsters our offering to meet the growing needs of our consumers," said Bob Baird, merchandising VP.

The paint department figured heavily in the Thursday morning presentation. So did payment systems, logistics and -- as one would expect -- the concept of customer service as delivered by a friendly store.

Jessup, Md.-based Newborn Bros. Co. filed a lawsuit May 24 in federal district court in Camden, N.J., against its competitor, Albion Engineering Co. of Moorestown, N.J.

Newborn alleges that Albion has violated the federal Lanham Act and New Jersey law, misleading distributors and customers for years using false claims that Albion’s products are “Made in USA.” Newborn further alleges that Albion sells products imported from Taiwan.

After a failed attempt at a merger, Martin Marietta Materials has launched a hostile $4.8 billion offer for its rival Vulcan Materials Co., according to the Wall Street Journal. The deal combines the two largest suppliers of construction aggregates -- one of the chief ingredients of concrete -- in the nation.

Morrison Supply Co., the fourth-largest distributor of plumbing and HVAC supplies in the United States, has sold a majority share to private equity firm Advent International.

Founded in 1917, Morrison is now the largest distributor of plumbing supplies in the southwestern United States. The company has 77 branches and showrooms, located in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and Kansas. Morrison has several lines of business, including plumbing, heating, ventilation & air conditioning (HVAC), industrial pipes, valves & fittings, oil & gas and waterworks.
