3M has unveiled the 3M Comfort Grip and Gripping Material work gloves, a new line of hand protection products that are designed to meet the needs of electricians and contractors.

The Comfort Grip gloves provide increased dexterity and grip while protecting against cuts, punctures and abrasions, addressing the dual (and sometimes competing) needs of electricians.

3M has announced a realignment of its major business groups to better serve global markets and customers, effective immediately.

The new structure will be comprised of five business groups: Consumer (2011 sales of $4.2 billion), Industrial ($9.6 billion), Health Care ($5.0 billion) and two newly formed business groups: Safety & Graphics ($5.5 billion), and Electronics & Energy ($5.7 billion). Previously, the company operated six segments.

LEED v4, the proposed update to the nation’s most prevalent green building program, has been under intense pressure to change its current wood certification rating system, which only recognizes one set of standards, those of the Forest Stewardship Council. But the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), which oversees the LEED program and its current revision process, is now under fire for another part of the LEED update that has nothing to do with wood.

A product linked to the Environmental Protection Agency’s lead paint rule has been approved for use on drywall and plaster.

The 3M LeadCheck Swabs, in compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP), are now recognized by the EPA for use on drywall and plaster.

The swaps are designed to turn red in the presence of lead and were the first commercially available lead test kit recognized by the EPA for use on painted wood and metal.

Fall has 25 years of experience with St. Paul, Minn.-based 3M. He is a member of the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council and chairman of the 3M Converter Markets Advisory Committee.

St. Paul, Minn.-based 3M has reported third-quarter net income of $1.09 billion, down 1.8% from $1.11 billion in the third quarter of 2010. Sales in the third quarter ended Sept. 30 totaled $7.53 billion, up 9.6% from $6.87 billion in the year-ago period. 

Net income for the first nine months totaled $3.33 billion, up 5.4% from $3.16 billion in the prior-year period. Net sales were $22.52 billion, up 12.9% from $19.95 billion in the first nine months of 2010.

Net income for the first nine months totaled $3.33 billion, up 5.4% from $3.16 billion in the prior-year period. Net sales were $22.52 billion, up 12.9% from $19.95 billion in the first nine months of 2010.
