In an interview with homechannelnews.com, Scott Humphrey, the CEO of the World Floor Covering Association, described some of the keys to success for the independent flooring retailer.
“Perseverance, creativity and diversification are gigantic for the independent retailer,” Humphrey said. “It’s important to understand the things that got you where you are today, aren’t necessarily going to keep you there.”
Top competition to the largely mom-and-pop membership of the WFCA, not surprisingly, is the big box. “The big boxes sell more flooring by accident then most people sell on purpose,” he said. And they have picked up about 12% market share over the past seven years.
Major goals of the WFCA, he said, are to bring stability to members, along with training and legislative advocacy. Regarding the latter and the tax advantages Internet retailers, Humphrey said: “The Marketplace Fairness Act is a big issue for us.”
The WFCA is a non-profit association.
