Cassity Jones, entrepreneur and founder of The Cassity Jones Companies, passed away Jan. 21, at his home in Longview, Texas.
During his career, he was a building contractor; a developer; and owned an automobile dealership, a grocer/wholesale company and various real estate ventures — all which led him to found the Cassity Jones Companies, which now includes Cassity Jones Lumber, Home Plus Floors, A-1 Rental, Winn Tile Co., and CJ Commercial.
Cassity served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps. After returning, he taught at Panola College. Thanks to postwar demand, he began building houses and opened a lumberyard.
In recent years, his company has been under the leadership of his sons John Jones, CEO; Jim Jones, CFO;and Jerry Jones, director of marketing. His grandson, Jeb Jones, is the chief operations officer. Stores are now located in Longview, Carthage, Tyler, Henderson, Marshall, Nacogdoches, Terrell and the Dallas area.
Cassity was a member of the East Texas Home Builders Association and the Texas Lumbermen’s Association, and was honored by this organization in 2000 as the “Lumberman of the Year” for the state of Texas. He served on the board of the National Lumbermen’s Association.
Recently, he was chosen by the Carthage ISD Alumni Association for the “Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.” Panola College also honored him with a permanent plaque on the campus’ “Panola Pony” in appreciation of Cassity’s support and service to the college and community.
